Coaches Clinic 2009 : St. Benedict's 2009 Garden State Coaches Clinic drew over 450 coaches from around the country to the HAB Gym on Sept. 25. The Fifth Annual Clinic featured some of the nation’s top basketball minds, including the legendary Hubie Brown, a Hall of Famer, who received the prestigious medal of St. Benedict from Fr. Edwin. Joing Brown as guest speakers/clinicians were Jamie Dixon of the University of Pittsburgh, Arizona's Sean Miller, former N.Y. Knicks coach and NBA analyst Jeff Van Gundy, Villanova's Jay Wright and Temple's Fran Dunphy.

HBO Shoot at St. Benedict's : HBO was at St. Benedict's on Sunday, August 30, to produce a portion of this month’s "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel." HBO's Mary Carillo spent a few hours at The Hive interviewing Olympic Gold Medalist Cullen Jones '02 for a segment on "Real Sports" that will air at 10 p.m. on Sept. 15. HBO's film crew spent the entire day capturing scenes of Jones and his mother, Debra, who had a face-to-face interview with Carillo. Jones then took a dip in the pool where he swam for the Gray Bees, while an HBO cameraman donned scuba gear to get footage of the Olympian with an underwater camera.

Cullen Jones Comes Home 2008

Community Gathering: August 2009 : The Second Annual Community Gathering, presented by St. Benedict's Parents Organization and coordinated brilliantly by Mary Hauck, took place on Aug. 8. The event drew over 350 guests and approximately 120 students were represented by their families, who got acclimated with the school and its daily happenings. Convocation kicked off the offering, followed by a number of short “lectures” in Conlin Auditorium, which were held in conjunction with numerous displays in the cafeteria along with demonstrations and tours set up around the school and grounds of Newark Abbey.

Community Gathering: August 2009

United States Naval Academy Hockey Team Spring 2009 : The United States Naval Academy visited St. Benedict's on March 27 as part of their continued leadership outreach program with the school. This time, members of the USNA hockey team were on hand for academic tutoring, leadership training, mentoring and physical training, which included putting a few Gray Bees students through their fitness challenge. It's always an awesome display - watching the Midshipmen in action interacting with the students at St. Benedict's.

Tricky Tray 2009 : St. Benedict’s Annual Tricky Tray Scholarship Fundraiser, sponsored by the Parents Organization, was held on Saturday, April 18. This very popular event offered hundreds of donated prizes that were auctioned off throughout the evening to a sold-out crowd in Dalton Gymnasium. This year’s theme, "Go Gray Bees," showcased athletic apparel from all the sports teams at The Hive. Some of the prizes that were distributed to the lucky winners included assorted gift baskets, shopping and dining certificates, a PlayStation 3 game system, a Weber Gas Grill, a Coach Bag & Wallet and much, much more. Organizer of the event, Mary Hauck, whose tireless effort helps the Tricky Tray go off without a hitch each year, would like to that all the sponsors who donated prizes and especially to the parents and student volunteers who gave their time and effort leading up to and during the night of the event.

520 Ski Trip 2009 : Annual Ski Trip to St. Vincent College

Varsity vs. St.Pat's : Myck Kabongo went coast-to-coast and converted a layup with 5 seconds left and lifted the Gray Bees to a 65-64 victory over St. Patrick on Saturday night at the Dunn Center in Elizabeth. Kabongo scored 10 points down the stretch, including going 8-of-10 from the line, to give coach Dan Hurley his second victory in the last three years over St. Patrick, the No. 4 team in the nation. The Texas-bound Kabongo finished with 17 points, while Rutgers commit Gilvydas Biruta added 13 points (all in the first half) and Mike Poole chipped in with 11. Future Temple product Aaron Brown, who hit some key buckets in the final quarter, and Xavier Munford dropped in 9 points apiece. SBP came into the game ranked 9th in the nation.

SBP Varsity vs.Cardoza : January 12, 2010 -- Myck Kabongo dropped in 25 points and Gilvydas Biruta pulled down 11 rebounds to go along with seven points when the Gray Bees basketball team rolled past Cardoza (N.Y.), 79-55, in Dalton Gym. Aaron Brown contributed 13 points, one more than the dozen posted by Mike Poole.

2009 Senior Alumni Luncheon at the Shore : A huge crowd turned out for the St. Benedict's Senior Alumni Luncheon, which is held annually for any alumnus who graduated fifty years or more ago, on Friday, June 12. Nearly 200 alumni and family turned out for the gathering at The Breakers on the Ocean in Spring Lake. Once again, Charles Manger, from the Class of '31, and Henry Lubben, who graduated from St. Benedict's a year later, were the oldest grads on hand. Members of the Class of '49 were there celerating their 60th Reunion, while the Class of '56 had the most attendees, packing two tables at the event.

Billy Budd - Fall 2009 : The St. Benedict’s Drama Guild staged “Billy Budd,” adapted from the Herman Melville novel by Louis Coxe and Robert Chapman, from Nov. 19th through the 22nd. There was a Reunion for St. Benedict’s Drama Guild/Summer Theater following the Nov. 21 performance that honored Frank S. Torok, the founding director of the school’s modern drama program in 1961. Torok, who, after his St. Benedict’s years as an inspiring teacher and director, began a long career with the Yale Drama School. The reunion drew a good crowd from the graduating classes of the mid-60’s, including three men who had principal roles in the original school production of “Billy Budd” in 1962 – Dr. Bob Lahita, Clay Ogorzaly and Gerry Hahn, each a member of the Class of ’63. Robeson Galleries Exhibit : These 9 murals produced by St. Benedict's advanced art students will be on display during the Fall Exhibition at the Robeson Galleries on the campus of Rutgers Newark. The 2 1/2 x 9-foot murals, all based on the Harlem Renaissance, will be displayed in the Orbit II Gallery during the six-month run, beginning Sept. 17.

Rutgers Robeson Gallery Show : Nine of 23 Murals from Pam Wye-Hunsinger’s advanced art class that were part of St. Benedict's Harlem Renaissance project, a highly-publicized multi-disciplinary effort that included more than half of the school's student population last year, will be on display alongside works from professional artists during the current Fall Exhibition in the Orbit II Gallery at the Robeson Galleries on the campus of Rutgers Newark. These pictures were shot at the Grand Opening Reception at the Robeson Galleries on Sept. 17. Fifteen students from Dr. David Wolf's English class gave spoken word performances and nine members of Dr. Jeremy Fletcher's jazz band performed in the main gallery that evening.
"It was truly our pleasure to have St. Benedict's participate in our Fall exhibitions, as well as the opening reception," said Miesha Hayden, Robeson Galleries Manager and Education Coordinator. "I can't tell you how many comments I received about the talent (St. Benedict's) students displayed."

Lend Me A Tenor - Spring 2009 : The Drama Guild’s production of “Lend Me a Tenor,” under the direction of Patricia Flynn, was held in Colin Auditorium March 19-22. The student actors/cast members, included Casey Hauck in the role of "Maggie," Roger Rose and Jerome Burwell as "Max," Leonard Clark as "Saunders," Aaron Walker and Justin Cruz as "Tito," Winner Okorie as "Maria," Amir Lasure and Steven Edwards and the "Bellhop," Miriam Amaechi as "Diana," and Chloe Tanis as "Julie."
The behind-the-scenes crew was aided by Travis Lands, Poduction Stage Mgr. and Master Carpenter; Steven Edwards, Stage Mgr.; Hasahn Conway, Asst. Stage Mgr.; Dan Krusznis, Lighboard; Paul Rejouis, Sound; Josdanson Exume, Deck Mgr.; Nolan Edmonson, Props Master; Justin Cruz and Jerome Burwell, Publicity and Program; and Gabriel Drouett, Set Construction. The painting and electric were handled by Armand Arnaldy, Samad Bishop, Josdanson Exume, Jordan Hardy, Chardwin Jean-Baptiste, Karl Marshall-Brown, Paul Rejouis, David Santana, David Suazo, Travis Lands, Matiku Makori, Keyonte Lee, Jonah Berkley and Jaysean Fleming.

Baseball 2009 : St. Benedict's baseball team hit the road for a Saturday matinee against Montclair on May 2. Although the Gray Bees fell to the Mounties, there was some exciting action from the opening inning when leadoff hitter Austin Koiquah was gunned down at the plate after being picked off third. Stephen Downar was hit by a ptich and eventually came around to score on an infield single by Gabe Drouet in the second. Downar also added a run-scoring, infield single of his own in the following frame, which plated Rich Fagan to complete to scoring for the Gray Bees in a 15-2 setback.

End of Summer '09 Reunion : St. Stephen's Green Publick House in Spring Lake Heights was the site for St. Benedict's "End of Summer" Alumni Reunion at the Shore. The event, which was held on Sept. 26, was hosted by St. Stephen's Green owners, Cornelius Durkin '79, Hugh Durkin '73, Murphy Durkin '82 and John Meade '63. Over 40 alumni came out for the afternoon of fine food and engaging conversation.

2009 State Prep Championships : The Gray Bees cross country team couldn't keep its State Prep championship streak alive after winning the last four titles. Coach Marty Hannon's squad wound up fifth with 121 points in the A Division race of the Prep Championships on Nov. 4 in Blairstown. Seton Hall won the team title to end St. Benedict's amazing run. The Gray Bees were led by Garland Miller, who came across the finish line in ninth place with a time of 17:30.
"Obviously, we were disappointed to not win after having a 4-year winning streak. However, we made very good progress (this year)," said Hannon, whose team then placed third in the B Division of the Catholic Conference Championships on Nov. 7. "The kids gave it their best shot. They did not shy away - from the gun they went with the leaders, but they just did not have enough to stay with the stronger teams that had somewhat more experience and depth."

Gray Bees Varsity vs. Oratory Prep : January 12, 2010 - Seniors Ian Brown, Mike Ciociola and Courtney Mosley competed for the last time in St. Benedict’s pool and helped lead the Gray Bees to a 113-57 victory over Oratory Prep in the final home meet of the season. Brown broke the one minute barrier for the first time in the 100-yard fly with a :59.54, while Ciociola and Mosley helped the 200 freestyle team post a winning time of 1:38.61 as coach Glenn Cassidy’s club won its third straight meet and raised its record to 3-2.

SBP vs. Lawrenceville (Part 1): Senior Night : Seniors Ochirbat Bayanjargal (145 pounds) and Greg Casimir (171) each registered pins in their last home match in a St. Benedict's singlet when the Gray Bees beat Lawrenceville, 52-18, in Dalton Gym on Feb. 3, 2010. Don-Tai Garner (125), Bobby Bah (160), Isaiah Cromwell (189) and Agbon Edomwonyi (HWT) also scored falls, while 119-pounder Zach Jacobs and 140-pounder Chris Dowdy picked up technical falls. Gray Bees defeat Morris Knolls (Feb. 5, 2010) : The Gray Bees went out and posted a dominant victory in their last home match of the 2009-2010 season by beating Morris Knolls, 18-9, in Shanley Gym. Coach Jeff Austin received unbeaten performances from Idris Mitchell, Rodrigo Bergamasco, Elliot McFarland, Kris White and Daniel Idrovo. Mitchell went 3-0 in Sabre, while Bergamasco and McFarland did likewise in Epee and Foil, respectively. White went 2-0 in Epee and Idrovo, a freshman, clinched the victory in the 20th bout with a 5-3 victory in his only bout of the day in Sabre. Jamar Victor (Sabre), Mike Daniel (Foil) and Francisco Queenan (Foil) all went 2-1 as Austin’s club raised its record to 8-3.
