Asia Project - Indian Percussion by Rohin Khemani
St. Benedict’s “Asia Project” – the year-long interdisciplinary project at SBP – continued on Feb. 2 when Rohin Khemani introduced Indian Music to the students at The Hive. The hour-long assembly in Conlin Auditorium featured Khemani demonstrating Indian music through percussion, especially his forte on the Tabla, a pair of hand drums that are the principle music of Hindustani (Northern India). Khemani also showcased his talents on other Indian percussion instruments such as the Kanjira (tambourine-like instrument), Mridangam (elongated double-sided drum), Thavil (a double-sided barrel drum) and Ghatam (musical pot), along with a few others. Khemani was a guest – and friend – of St. Benedict’s Director of Music, Dr. Jeremy Fletcher.
